GIM Grand Rounds: The Aging of the Homeless Population - An Emerging Crisis

In this talk, Dr. Kushel will discuss the causes, consequences and potential solutions to the emerging crisis of homelessness among older adults. While in the early 1990s, approximately 11% of homeless single adults were aged 50 and over, now, approximately half are. In this talk, Dr. Kushel will describe the reasons for this crisis, the life course experiences that lead to homelessness in older adults, the health consequences and the solutions to this crisis.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to: 

  • To understand the reasons for the changing age characteristics among homeless adults
  • To understand the underlying causes of homelessness
  • To understand the health consequences of homelessness in older adults
  • To understand how healthcare providers can play a role in ending homelessness among older adults.
