Research Interests

The Wiley Lab develops methods for using electronic health record data for clinical evidence generation and biomedical research in support of precision medicine. Ongoing projects include building and mining a clinical data repository to inform clinical management of intracranial aneurysms, developing tools to support abstraction of medical charts, and supporting informatics and data science needs of other collaborative projects in genomics and precision medicine.

Teaching

  • Director, Coursera Clinical Data Science Specialization (2019)
    School of Medicine,
This specialization provides learners with hands on experience in use of electronic health records and informatics tools to perform clinical data science. The series of six courses is designed to augment learner’s existing skills in statistics and programming to provide examples of specific challenges, tools, and appropriate interpretations of clinical data. At the end of the specialization, students will know how to: 1) understand electronic health record data types and structures, 2) deploy basic informatics methodologies on clinical data, 3) provide appropriate clinical and scientific interpretation of applied analyses, and 4) anticipate barriers in implementing informatics tools into complex clinical settings. Students demonstrate mastery of these skills by completing practical application projects using real clinical data. Thanks to our industry partnership with Google Cloud, all students have access to a fully hosted online data science computational environment.
  • Director, BIOS6310 - Practical Clinical Research Informatics (2018)
    Colorado School of Public Health,
This course provides students with hands on experience in clinical research informatics involving secondary use of electronic health record (EHR) data, clinical informatics databases, and basic clinical data science as preparation for more advanced informatics or data science coursework.
  • Director, BERD/CIDA Short Course Fundamentals of EHR Data Research (2021)
    School of Medicine,
A six-week short course for researchers or students wanting to learn more about the foundations of Electronic Health Records-based research. This course provides a practical introduction to EHR data and the study design process. Bring your research question with you as we will also walk through the overall process of conducting an EHR-based study on the CU campus including the COMIRB application and Health Data Compass request process. Finally we will touch on how to combine EHR data with other resources on campus like the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine Biobank. Coding skills are not required for this course.
